Following a successful women’s art show at Gus Lucky’s Gallery last March, a
handful of women artists met at Matt’s Bar in South Minneapolis.
Brainstorming, they discussed launching a new women artists’
collective in the Twin Cities. Three months later, Women Create! is proud to
invite you to their first collectively organized show, to open at ArTrujillo
Studio/Gallery on June 30th. The opening begins at 7:30pm and the celebration
will run until late.
Women Create! was founded to provide a place where women artists
can come together in the spirit of collaboration to discuss our work, network
resources and skills, and provide a base of support. We have grown from
initial meetings of five to six artists, to a thriving group of more than
twenty women who meet weekly to discuss work and experiences, and to plan
exhibits and activities.
This grassroots group has been built mostly through word of
mouth, but the need for such a group has been reinforced by the
overwhelmingly positive response of the artists themselves. Many women have
said, "Yes, this is exactly what I have been looking for."
Women Create! is founded on the principal that in a competition
and prestige driven art world in which women are under represented, it is
important to have a place where women can come together for collaboration and
support. We believe that by supporting each other as artists, we are
supporting a women’s presence within the art community, and through this we
are strengthening this community.
Women Create! is open to female artists of any medium and all
skill levels. Membership is based solely on willingness to participate and
contribute.
This show is a reflection of our first few months of working
together as a collective. Twenty-four artists will be exhibiting their work
in mediums ranging from painting, photography and drawing to jewelry making,
sculpture, and installation art. Please join us in this celebration of our
work collectively, and as individual artists.
Gallery hours are noon to eight daily through July 30th.
ArTrujillo is located at 301 E. Lake St. Suite 01, on the corner of Third
Avenue and east Lake Street in the basement of the International Bazaar.
