Laura Schoonover:

images that express feminist, goddess, historical and personal meanings

Laura Schoonover is a mixed media artist with a concentration on fibers and textiles.  She has been exhibiting in Missouri and nationally since 1986 in juried, non-juried and invitational shows.  In 1995, Laura earned her BFA degree from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.  She majored in fibers/textiles and minored in metalsmithing and ceramics.

The current exhibit is from her Body Series, a series of abstracted figures created mainly with steel wire, fabrics and/or handmade paper.  The figures are either convex or concave in nature.  Convex symbolizes the embodiment of a current self, feeling or event awaiting the metamorphoses to another spiritual level.  Concave symbolizes the remnants of a former self, feeling or event that has changed and moved on.  Each piece is embellished with stamped, transferred and sewn symbols and images that express feminist, goddess, historical and personal meanings.  For example, to Laura, beads represent dreams and to the ancient Egyptians, beads represented luck.  The figures do not have specific identities in order to convey a more universal experience.
