My artistic style which I have entitled Oneiric Realism came about from a 27 year struggle to tap into a natural stream of creativity within myself. At the time of Dream Matter One there was no set concept. I did however have the influence of the definition of Surrealism by André Breton from the Surrealist Manifesto of 1924 within my mind.
Surrealism, n. Psychic automatism in its pure state by which one proposes to express verbally, by means of the written word, or in any other manner the actual functioning of thought. Dictated by thought, in the absence of any control exercised by reason, exempt from any aesthetic or moral concern.
My chosen mode of travel toward this inner creativity was to allow myself to draw spontaneously without mental judgment .... allowing a free flow of expression to come forth. The title and concept of Dream Matter came after the fact, much like finding ourselves within this reality and then looking about trying to understand its meaning or purpose. During the rendering of Dream Matter Two my mind doing as mind does, began to look for meaning.... As I watched the biomorphic shapes within the drawing change their mental representations, the idea emerged of a fluid matter similar to unformed dreams.... I then came up with the concept/title Dream Matter.
Also during the creation of Dream Matter Two, I had begun listening to audio tapes of the lectures of Alan Watts on the topic of Taoism. While listening to these lectures, I began to see an analogous connection between my Dream Matter concept and the metaphysical teachings of Taoism. At that point I saw a connection between the fluctuation of mind, Taoist laws of reality, and my approach to drawing Dream Matter. I am expressing where the mind s function meets with the core fabric of reality.... At the point of the eternal fluctuation of phenomena ..... The One.
When I create my Dream Matter pieces I create with the full intention that they are an actual place in time with a real existence subject to and influenced by the natural forces that shape our known universe. As each piece is born it is a step in the evolutionary chain of my artistic creation.
I draw with my pencil the cosmic dance, rendering from the primordial ooze the myriad things.
