Obed Gómez is a contemporary Latin American artist whose passion for life and art are vividly seen in his colorful pieces. Gómez was born on October 24, 1966 in Santurce, Puerto Rico. From a very early age he demonstrated interest in drawing. At the age of 11 he began to take private art classes. Soon he entered the League of Art of San Juan where he expanded his knowledge in drawing and painting. Four years later, he began art classes at the Adrés Bueso Academy of Arts. By that time the young artist had finished high school and began his first year at the University of Sacred Heart where he graduated with a B.A. in Communications with a major in visual arts. He lived in Puerto Rico until he relocated to the United States in 1995 with his wife.
At the moment, the artist is a graphic designer who works for a publishing company in Lake Mary, FL. His art adopts many forms and styles, demonstrated in " The Jibaritos ", an acrylic on canvas which represents the folklore of his native island.
Obed's work has indeed found its niche and its own voice. This is most evident in his unique, mixed-media assemblages, inspired his boundless passion for the vast diversity of Human-kind; its multitude of cultures, his ancestral past, and traditions.
"My intention is to reach the people with positive energy of love, balance and tranquility through images and colors. I also intend to honor my culture through my work. ", says the Puerto Rican artist.
The artist has been working on a series of projects that exposes the virtues of his people's culture. " Culture is the universal element that offers direction, integrity and continuation in us independently of our ethnic origin. Our cultures may vary but certain elements exist that unite us as members of the human race... in that sense we are all connected. "
Gómez express his art by means of a variety of media including, acrylic on canvas, watercolor, pencil, and ink. Also he has evolved as caricaturist, instructor of art for children, graphic artist, and at the moment he is an Internet designer. His rich cultural inheritance - Hispanic, Indian African, Taíno and his passion for life, influences in his works of art which have been exhibited in the United States and the Caribbean.
